In this hands-on workshop participants will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art methods developed as part of the BUILD-OPT research project which are likely to challenge their preconceptions about the value and power of “optimization”, particularly as a creative structural design tool.
The Workshop will take place at The Building Centre in London on Tuesday 13 November 2018, from 17:30-20:00.
Participants will use a plug-in for Grasshopper that uses 'layout optimization', a powerful technique that has to date been little exploited by construction professionals. The technique can identify efficient structural forms for a range of constructions, including long-span roofs, gridshells, space-frames and tall building superstructures. It has some similarities with the more familiar topology optimization, but is better suited to the kinds of skeletal structures encountered in building structures.
BUILD-OPT is a current UK government-funded research project involving the Universities of Sheffield, Bath and Edinburgh. The project seeks to address a range of barriers to uptake of layout optimization. As part of this we have developed a plug-in for Grasshopper which makes it easy for a designer to apply layout optimization at the concept design stage.

Participants will benefit by being exposed to state-of-the-art methods which are likely to be unfamiliar to them and will challenge their preconceptions about the value and power of “optimization”, particularly as a creative conceptual design tool.
